Cambodia here we COME!

Become a BACK-PACKER: Destination: Cambodia

8 January 2010

Looking for the light in Sapa, Vietnam. Was cloudy day so no sun.

re-cap believes in budget-travel for ALL!!

You're reading this because you love to TRAVEL. And not just ANY travel; it's the worst kind you can find! Alternative travel cannot be any cooler and here's YOUR chance to join us on a road trip from Thailand-Cambodia.

It develops your intuition, street-smarts and people skills. Geared to expose you to the rugged and `no-plan' plan for budget travel. SO you'll always be on your toes!
A must for the ALMOST adventure-seekers. Just need one small push over the edge. re-cap will gladly do that for you!
IT IS: Personal development, Self-Discovery, Alternative-travel, Team-building.
It's NOT!! a Budget tour. For the faint-hearted. A holiday with mum & dad.

Community Cafes

November 1 2009

Realizing that coffee-shops are the hang-out places for any neighborhood,re-cap.org experimented on the coffee shop's roles as a place forcommunity-centered learning, discuss and share knowledge related tocurrent issues. Our pilot project with TREATS cafe (Taman Tun Dr.Ismail) attempts to establish this `teaching’ ...methodology. To ensure the objectives were met, we started with children; re-cap introduced environmental awareness by making art from recycled materials.

44th Central Glass International Design: competition entry by re-cap

August 3, 2009 Monday

After weeks of busting our chops over the design of the transport hub; we finally printed out the work.  The idea was a very simple approach on a new type of community gathering place. The major challenge, however; was not the design, but `designing’ the idea board.

These people don’t understand English and we don’t understand Japanese; so pictograms it was. Not an easy feat because we went through 3 composition drafts.

ABOVE: re-cap's design entry. The team many late mornings (i.e 3 a.m) to get this ready before deadline and here it is. Much gratitude to the dedicated team members; Frankie, Cat, Iwaz, Elvin and Suzy (and Milk).

Toyota Responds...

July 13, 2009 Monday

Desperate to get the research going, re-cap submitted an application to the Toyota Foundation for a research grant that amounted to RM150, 000. This year-long research would be based in Bayan Baru, Penang It will actively involve non-government organizations such as Bus User Group (BUG), Citizens for Efficient Public Transport (Cepat) and Rapid Penang. Everything was a dream on a piece of paper titled: ‘Reinventing public transport towards the creation of a sustainable city: case-study: Bayan Baru, Penang.’; until one day; when Suzy opened her gmail box……

Dear Mr/Ms. Suzy Sulaiman,

(a contact person for Mr. Loh, Laurence Kwong Yu's project)

Hello. This is Shiki NISHIDA, an assistant program officer for the research grant program of the Toyota Foundation. Thank you for your application for the 2009 research grant program.

Now, we are on the process of the selection. For that process, we would like to know some points more on your project. It would be great if you would response to our questions as much as possible by 12th July…….

Suzy nearly fell off her chair. This was an exciting response. As oppose to last year’s `Thank you for submitting to us; but NO THANKS’

After Suzy recovered from her short panic attack; given a 48 hour deadline by Toyota; she furiously typed away to Mr/Ms.Nishida…

PS. Mr/Ms Nishida, will I get extra points if I told you that Laurence drives a TOYOTA Camry? (I wrote that in too, btw)

re-cap
became the new buzz word at the 14th international conference on thinking held recently at the KL Convention Center organized by UPM (22-26 June 2009). Great thinkers such as Edward de Bono (lateral thinking & 6 hats),Howard Gardner (multiple intelligences)Tony Buzan (mind-map) and our very own Tun Mahathir were present at this world-renowned event. It was great that re-cap.org shared the same limelight as prolific thinkers.

Click here to know what Suzy talked about.

De Bono used an overhead projector for his talk where he diagrammed and sketched spontaneously. I was truly amazed at how he simplified complex ideas through simple 2-second drawings. Old school!

De Bono shows how pros do it!

re-cap’s projects were presented to an international crowd through Suzy’s paper,`Grab your backpack & hit the road: Creating the thinking traveler’.

Suzy shows she's a pro!:-p
